Biography

Most seminary students have an appreciation for history, church history at least. We've been spoiled at DTS with Drs. John Hannah & Jeff Bingham.

But, not that many seem to read biographies. However, I'm anticipating that some in this arena have.

I have 2 questions:

1. What have been your favorite Christian biographies to read?

2. Anyone read any good biography on Jan Huss? I'm wanting to do a little study on our Bohemian brother, but was wondering if anyone had any particular knowledge therein.

I'm a big biography fan, even those shows on A&E where they do a one-hour biography on some actor or some historical figure.

But Christian biography allows me to see God's grace poured out in the life of another, which challenges me to greater faithfulness. However, it also encourages me, since I know we serve the same God who loves and cares for me as well.

My favorite biographies:
Dallimore, George Whitefield (2 vols, condensed was good too)
Bainton, Here I Stand
Elliot, The Shadow of the Almighty
Edwards, The Life & Diary of David Brainerd
Murray, Jonathan Edwards: A New Biography

What say you? Read any good biographies?

Marsden on Jonathan Edwards. I've read it several times. The two-volume set on Lloyd-Jones is also classic.

To the Golden Shore (about Adoniram Judson) is good.

Peter Brown's bio of Augustine is a favorite.

Marsden on Edwards is excellent.

I just finished a new bio on Calvin by Robert Reymond that was very good.

Good tips. Dr. Hannah had mentioned getting Marsden on Edwards and to my shame I have yet to do so. I was hoping to "borrow" it from Jay the Bennett sometime, but he's been wise to my tricks for far too long.

Thanks a lot, lads.
